More perspective on 'commercialized spirituality'

Posted on Mar 14th, 2006 by Skeye : Absolutely Nothing Skeye

This is a recent message exchange with a new Zaadzster friend:

Re: Integral Naked

Right, I remember hearing IN being refered to here on Zaadz. Ken Wilber does not resonate, neither does 'commercialized spirituality'. I realize there is more to this issue and it is not 'black and white', but there is a grand capitalization of 'sprirtuality' happening in the world that is detrimental to true understanding and the nature of what I see there(IN), and on here, has this feel to it. But of course this is a matter of perspective and depends on what one feels is 'true', and one's knowledge of 'self'.

Namaste, Skeye

True... and, there are lots of ways that people move towards spirituality - commercialized spirituality might be a start for many - therefore potentially very powerful as well as potentially detrimental... like many things uh?

Yes, it's not truly for 'me' to say what is appropriate for 'another', only sharing perspective about the potential for abuse and further distraction. The essential questioning of intention is necessary to discern appropriateness, and if this is not supported by what one is looking to for 'guidance', then it is most likely not in support of true Heart and well being.

If you haven't read it yet, my blog post: The Field of Zaadz, capitalism and the questioning of intention addresses this.

'Spirituality' can be supported without the need to market it as such. It can be expressed without turning it into 'something' to be worshipped and believed separate from 'wordly' or anything else.

Is this not the message: Oneness, wholeness, unity, the unseparable eternal?

'My spirituality' is created by the belief there is something that can be bought and sold, learned, owned to give someone something that is not already inherent in thier being. 'My spirituality' is just one more window dressing for the illusion of 'self'. Yes, it may be necessary for a 'seeker' to believe momentarily in 'themselves' as a strong individual, but this is supported by the compassion of Heart that knows beyond/within all identity the reality of being that is primary, that 'individual' is secondary to. The continued commercialization of 'spirituality' distracts and supports the egoic belief in the separate self as primary, as a 'reality' that can be confused, misguided, 'lost'. When spirituality is used appropriately, it is a guide post pointing beyond/within itself to the true 'goal' but not setup AS the goal.

Does this resonate, make sense?  :)

Tribe.net is commercial, but not promoting itself as 'spiritual' which, while I do not like most of what they commercialize(it does seem to be changing though), I don't mind it so much and they have great tools for communication. This is not to say Brian has been dishonest at all, because he hasn't, only that this marketing of spirituality can be somewhat misleading and easier to mistake at face value. Which is good for exampling the need for investigation and self-responsibility.  :)

I am not against Brian and what his Heart intention is, I am only questioning if he is truly aware of or clear on what that is.

Nice to be communing with you...

Peace, Skeye

Hey, great perspective on the current “spiritual-fad” that has sprung up beneath the actual movement of “spiritually-minded” people, lately.  I’m kinda in a similiar dilemma of seperating what from what, so it’s good to see that it’s actually something that’s “in the air”.  Investigation and responsibility are definitely key :)

Thanks for putting this out there!

Hey Skeye,

I just wanted to say that I am going to be bailing from Zaadz soon. Pod priviledges only to “ambassadors” was the last straw. if i wanted to be affiliated with an elitist spritual movement, i'd go back to the christian church. however, let's stay in touch via tribe and email.

i look forward to future connections!
